In 1090 DR, the massed forces of the goblin nations and their orc allies
battled human forces at what now is known as the Battle of the Bones.
Titanic armies slaughtered each other by the thousands and it is said
that the bones were piled a foot deep for miles around.
At present day, undead roam these desolate hills, dissuading most
travelers. Some were created during the heat of battle, as evil acts
spawned ghosts and revenants. In the months afterwards, the corpses
became fresh material for necromancers plying their trade. It is even
rumored that powerful undead themselves took up residence here,
amassing large armies of zombies and skeletons.
Some of the original goblin tribes also stayed, scavanging the booty
of the dead. Where carrion crawlers dragged their prey into burrows,
gold, weapons, and items of power became rich veins for the bone miners.
Like other miners, they burrow through the ground, avoiding mindless
undead and the harsh climate above. The only question is how they
obtain their vital goods, as they do not trade outside of their domain.
It is thought that they have secret contacts with outside caravans,
or perhaps the undead themselves.
